چکیده

Using a high-resolution cosmologicalN -body simulation, we identify the ejected population of subhalos, which are halos at redshift z = 0 but were once contained in more massive ‘host’ halos at high redshifts. The fraction of the ejected subhalos in the total halo population of the same mass ranges from 9% to 4% for halo masses from ∼ 10 to ∼ 10 hM⊙. Most of the ejected subhalos are distributed within 4 times the virial radius of their hosts. These ejected subhalos have distinct velocity distribution around their hosts in comparison to normal halos. The number of subhalos ejected from a host of given mass increases with the assembly redshift of the host. Ejected subhalos in general reside in high-density regions, and have a much higher bias parameter than normal halos of the same mass. They also have earlier assembly times, so that they contribute to the assembly bias of dark matter halos seen in cosmological simulations. However, the assembly bias is not dominated by the ejected population, indicating that large-scale environmental effects on normal halos are the main source for the assembly bias.

The Unorthodox Orbits of Substructure Halos

We use a suite of cosmological N-body simulations to study the properties of substructure halos (subhalos) in galaxy-sized cold dark matter halos. We extend prior work on the subject by considering the whole population of subhalos physically associated with the main system. These are defined as subhalos that have at some time in the past been within the virial radius of the halo’s main progenit...

On the Spin Bias of Satellite Galaxies in the Local Group-like Environment

We utilize the Millennium-II simulation databases to study the spin bias of dark subhalos in the Local Group-like systems which have two prominent satellites with comparable masses. Selecting the group-size halos with total mass similar to that of the Local Group (LG) from the friends-of-friends halo catalog and locating their subhalos from the substructure catalog, we determine the most massiv...

The Shapes, Orientation, and Alignment of Galactic Dark Matter Subhalos

We present a study of the shapes, orientations, and alignments of Galactic dark matter subhalos in the “Via Lactea” simulation of a Milky Way-size ΛCDM host halo. Whereas isolated dark matter halos tend to be prolate, subhalos are predominantly triaxial. Overall subhalos are more spherical than the host halo, with minor to major and intermediate to major axis ratios of 0.68 and 0.83, respective...

The Via Lactea INCITE Simulation: Galactic Dark Matter Substructure at High Resolution

It is a clear unique prediction of the cold dark matter paradigm of cosmological structure formation that galaxies form hierarchically and are embedded in massive, extended dark halos teeming with self-bound substructure or ”subhalos”. The amount and spatial distribution of subhalos around their host provide unique information and clues on the galaxy assembly process and the nature of the dark ...

The phase-space distribution of infalling dark matter subhalos

We use high-resolution numerical simulations to study the physical properties of subhalos when they merge into their host halos. An improved algorithm is used to identify the subhalos. We then examine their spatial and velocity distributions in spherical and triaxial halo models. We find that the massive subhalos are more preferentially accreted along the major axis of the host halo than the lo...
